The Rocky Mountain News could be saved and could thrive. It needs to divorce itself from the joint operating agreement. I’ve owned and operated newspapers and radio stations in small and medium sized markets.
It needs to again be its own paper, totally independent of the Denver Post JOA.
It can be saved, but it will take a lot of work, sacrifice and
some investors who I am sure could be easily located.
It wouldn’t take as large of an investment as one might imagine, but expenses and watching overhead are more important than capital.
I have had job offers to manage dailies in the past but opted for
my own newspaper which I have run for 25 years in Florida.
The job can be done. Part of it is up to E.W. Scripps Co., and
terms to by certain assets of The Rocky Mountain News.
Should that be a roadblock, it would be far easier, less costly
and less restrictive to simply start up a new publication, even if
it is weekly at first.
Price concessions would have to be granted by Scripps relating to
several issues; if that is not done, go it alone with a new name.
They are going to have tax losses no matter which way they go.
You can forget about your web site “odd billionaire” comment.
Many billionaires are now mere millionaires and are wiser for the
crash.
Saving the News will be a nuts and bolts operation almost from
the beginning, no odd billionaire will come on stage. That was something that may have happened 10 or 15 years ago, but egoes have gotten very expensive of late.
The market and support is there, which is the most important thing.
