Religion writer Jean Torkelson remembers Meadow

By Jean Torkelson
Over the years, my interaction with James was usually brief, but somehow, always unforgettable.
The sequence would go like this. Wandering past my desk he’d say, with a baleful look in his eye, something on the order of:
“Jean TORKELSON,” (always booming out the last name in stentorian, Edward R. Murrow tones) “RELIGION WRITER.”
Followed by: “Friend of GOD.”
Then he’d fix a bemused look on me. (Was that a sardonic, reproachful gleam behind his eyes? Or was it a twinkle? I could never quite tell.)
And I’d say something like, “Yeah, I may be a friend of God, but you write like God!”
“Oh Jean, ” he’d say, as if despairing of me, as he kept moving on.
A lovely man.

Jean:
Sounds just like James. He was a wonderful person, and lived up to his self-proclaimed statement of being the best writer in Denver. I cannot believe his is gone.
Jean, glad to see you in print again. Please continue; I miss My Rocky sooo much, and it helps to be able to read some of my favorite columnists articles.
actually it doesn’t matter what Religion you may have, as long as you treat the other person right.`,*
