Time for Bowlen to cuff some ears

March 17, 2009 | 9:18 am 10

Some of the great childish feuds in television history lasted about 30 minutes before a father figure intervened wielding a hand of authority.

This feud, “The Feud” if you will, between Broncos coach Josh McDaniels and quarterback Jay Cutler, has gone on long enough.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen has to end it now. Never mind that the Broncos still haven’t addressed their biggest need — a pass rush — during the off-season. The Feud requires immediate attention.

The Feud is about as childish as things go. Cutler is sulking over the trade discussions McDaniels took part in with significant interest — the interest being his former quarterback at New England, Matt Cassel.

Cliff Huxtable never would let Theo and Vanessa drag out their differences this long. Ward Cleaver would give Wally and the Beav a stern lecture, then make the boys shake hands and play fair.

Tony Soprano would . . . well, maybe the Soprano way would take things to the extreme, but the feud certainly would end sooner than later.

Bowlen needs to end this juvenile saga now. And it is juvenile.

When he fired his longtime coach, good friend and neighbor, Mike Shanahan, Bowlen spoke these words in an authoritative tone: “I run the show.”

It sounded as if Bowlen laid down the long arm of the law for all to see and hear.

Right now, it seems Cutler believes his arm is stronger. He wants to force a trade — or a new contract to shake more money out of Bowlen’s pockets.

McDaniels, by holding steadfast to his belief that no player on the Broncos roster is untouchable, has put his owner in a precarious position of choosing sides.

In two months on the job, McDaniels has not yet had a chance to win a game for Bowlen. Cutler, in three seasons, has not yet led Bowlen’s Broncos to a playoff appearance.

And Bowlen, who has seen The Drive and The Fumble lead to Super Bowls, has not yet put an end to The Feud.

Sticking Cutler and McDaniels in a corner for timeout to readjust their pouty attitudes isn’t good enough. Bowlen and his two boys should convene immediately — be it in his office, a Chuck E. Cheese’s or wherever — and resolve the problem.

In that meeting, Bowlen asserts his power. He’s the owner and makes it known in no uncertain terms that he wants Cutler to quarterback the team this season. He makes it known that McDaniels, as head coach, holds an authority that Cutler must respect.

Or, Bowlen tells Cutler that he’ll comply with the trade request.

Whichever way he chooses, Bowlen must be sure to end this summit with a quote from the Book of Cosby, reminding Cutler and McDaniels of the following:

He brought both of them into the Broncos organization, and he can take both of them out.

    Play it again, Sam!
As the mother of 5, grandmother of 11, this feud would have ended long ago. They both need to be sent to their room with the following admonishment, “Either you play nice together, or you don’t get to play at all!” Who is in charge here? Do we really have the time to listen to all this silliness. Bowlen should be aware that even the most staunch fan (since 1979) will get tired of this. Sounds like a soap. Thanks for your input and I will leave you with the following, “I miss my Rocky”.

Shame on the three of them! McD for not simply taking a great qb and going into his first season with him. Jay for not stating his issue with management then walking into the locker room and saying LETS GET TO THE PLAYOFFS BOYS. Shame on Bowlen for not tightening the reigns on McD as soon as the Cutler trades talks started. Pat, you have a qb, go to the ends of the earth with him like you did John…

I agree. PB has been silent long enough. I am tired of the lead story on the television news being who said what or whose house is for sale.
    Get a life.

It’s really unbelievable that Bowlen has let it go this far. If he runs the show then what kind of show is he running?

At this point it is a lose-lose situation. If Cutler stays his relationship with McD is most likely going to transfer to the field. If he goes, what then? Simms? Stafford? Sanchez? Huge gamble that sets the team back another few years. Not to mention, the way McD has handled things thus far – if he has a bad season and that translates into the fans turning on him even more, he will be gone as well. Then you really get to start over.

I would hate to see Cutler go, he does have potential, maybe that will come out if has a great defense to play behind.

If the option to trade him to Detroit is there, or else somehow managing to get Matt Leinart (either directly, or a 3way trade involving Vince Yong) was there, It might be best to trade him.

but for anyone else out there, Cutler might be worth keeping then trading down to another qb.

Mr Bowlen is not without intelligence. There MUST be more that we don’t know or he would have shown his hand. Something exists behind the curtain. Sam is right. It is time. This drama is destroying the credability the Broncos have created over time. Mr. Bowlen, speak up, set the story straight. Eliminate the guessing. Put this team back together. Support your coach. It’s time for YOUR leadership again, because Jay is not the man we need to lead as shown in his inability to step up on the field and now off the field. We need a leader. It should have been Jay, then Josh had his turn, but NOW it must be PB. The team needs it and the fans deserve it. Someone must step up because the two have stepped aside.

    Sam, great suggestions.

Why hasn’t Bowlen thought of this…
