SaveTheNews.org launches

July 7, 2009 | 1:00 pm 0

Expanding its campaign to seek policy solutions that address the crisis in journalism, Boston-based Free Press has launched a new Web site, SaveTheNews.org.

“In response to the shifting media landscape, there have been a number of important nonprofit initiatives, think-tank convenings, panel discussions and foundation reports on the state of journalism, the impact of technology on newsgathering, and the search for new economic models,” organizers say on the site.

“Free Press is throwing its hat into the ring because — despite all the ink spilled about journalism’s demise – there is rarely any mention of how public policy contributed to this decline, and what new policies could help reverse it. We believe that if journalism is a vital public good central to our democracy, then we must identify policy solutions. to protect and foster that good.”

Among policy solutions the organization seeks are incentives for divestiture, development of alternative ownership structures, and investment in research and development related to the industry.
